Man of Tomorrow starts filming, with Lex Luthor behind bars

James Gunn's Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow begins principal photography, with Gunn teasing Brainiac and Lex Luthor in jail.

On 20 April 2026, cameras rolled on Man of Tomorrow. James Gunn’s sequel to Superman began principal photography, right on the schedule set the previous September.

What we know

Gunn marked the first day with teases for fans: a hint of Lars Eidinger’s Brainiac and a reminder that Lex Luthor, played by Nicholas Hoult, starts the story in jail after the events of the first film. The story is built around an uneasy alliance between Lex and Superman against Brainiac.

The cast had been growing through the spring. Aaron Pierre, who plays Green Lantern John Stewart in HBO’s Lanterns, was reported to have joined in March, and in the same month filming began, Adria Arjona was reported as cast, with Maxima named as her likely role. David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan return as Clark and Lois.

Why it matters

With filming under way, the July 2027 release looked secure. The shoot went on to wrap in late August 2026. For every confirmed name and date, see our Man of Tomorrow guide, and for the order to watch everything before it, our DCU watch order.
