The file
The facts, in one place.
General Zod is a Kryptonian military leader and one of Superman's oldest enemies. He first appeared in Adventure Comics #283 (April 1961), by Robert Bernstein and George Papp, the same issue that introduced the Phantom Zone. Under a yellow sun he has Superman's powers but usually less strength, because he has spent less time under it. Terence Stamp and Michael Shannon have played him on film.

Lex Luthor is Superman’s opposite. General Zod is something closer to a mirror: a Kryptonian soldier with the same powers who uses them to conquer.

| Weaknesses | Kryptonite and red sunlight, just like Superman | Confirmed |

How Superman beats him
- The Phantom Zone: the classic answer is to send him back.
- Depowered: in Superman II (1980), Superman takes away Zod’s powers and beats him.
- Executed: in Superman (vol. 2) #22 (1988), Superman uses gold, then green, kryptonite on a pocket-universe Zod.
- Killed: in Man of Steel (2013), Superman snaps Zod’s neck.
The last two are the best-known exceptions to Superman’s no-kill rule.
