Superman villains: the Man of Steel's greatest enemies
Superman's greatest villains explained: Lex Luthor, Brainiac, General Zod, Darkseid, Doomsday, Bizarro, Metallo, Parasite and more, with debuts.
The short answer
Superman's archenemy is Lex Luthor. His other major villains are Brainiac, General Zod, Darkseid, Doomsday, Bizarro, Metallo, Parasite, Mongul and Mr. Mxyzptlk. Brainiac is the main threat in Man of Tomorrow (2027).

|---|---|---|
| Lex Luthor | Action Comics #23 (1940) | The archenemy: human genius, ego and envy |
| Brainiac | Action Comics #242 (1958) | Shrank the Kryptonian city of Kandor; the Man of Tomorrow villain |
| General Zod | Adventure Comics #283 (1961) | Kryptonian war criminal, freed from the Phantom Zone |
| Darkseid | Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen #134 (1970) | Jack Kirby’s tyrant god of Apokolips |

| Mongul | DC Comics Presents #27 (1980) | Warlord of the planet Warworld |
| Mr. Mxyzptlk | Superman #30 (1944) | A fifth-dimensional imp, vulnerable only to his own name said backwards |
| Toyman | Action Comics #64 (1943) | Winslow Schott, who fights with deadly toys and gadgets instead of powers |
Lex Luthor
Luthor began as a mad scientist and was reinvented in 1986 as a corporate billionaire, which is the version most adaptations use. He has been played by Gene Hackman, Kevin Spacey, Michael Rosenbaum, Jesse Eisenberg, Jon Cryer and Nicholas Hoult. See his full file, Lex Luthor explained, and our Lex Luthor guide.
Brainiac
Brainiac is a cold, collecting intelligence that steals cities and destroys the worlds they came from. He is the villain Superman fans have most wanted to see on film, and Man of Tomorrow finally delivers him. See Brainiac explained.
General Zod
Zod is everything Superman could have been if Krypton’s pride had raised him instead of Kansas. Terence Stamp’s “Kneel before Zod!” in Superman II (1980) made him a pop-culture icon, and Michael Shannon played a more tragic, militaristic version in Man of Steel (2013), whose ending is the most debated exception to Superman’s no-kill rule. See General Zod explained.
Doomsday
Created to kill Superman, and he did, in 1992’s The Death of Superman. The story sold millions of copies and was later adapted in Batman v Superman and in animation. See Doomsday explained.
Why the villains work
Most of Superman’s enemies are built to test something he can’t punch away: Luthor tests his ideals, Bizarro his identity, Zod his heritage and Doomsday his limits. Many also exploit his weaknesses.
