Superman, explained · Allies and friends
Batman.
World's finest, and rarely in agreement.
Superman and Batman are DC's most famous partnership. Their first real team-up was in Superman #76 (1952), where they learn each other's secret identities, and they teamed up regularly in World's Finest Comics from 1954. Because every reboot retells it, they have 'met for the first time' at least 13 times.

In depth
The full story.
Superman and Batman are opposites who work: one trusts people and works in daylight, the other trusts no one and works at night. Their partnership is so popular that DC has retold their first meeting again and again.
When did Superman and Batman first team up?
Their first real team-up is “The Mightiest Team in the World” in Superman #76 (1952). The two heroes end up sharing a cabin on a cruise ship, each discovers the other’s secret identity, and they join forces. Two years later, World’s Finest Comics #71 (1954) began a long run of regular team-ups, most of them written by Edmond Hamilton until 1966.
They had appeared together before that, with the Justice Society in All-Star Comics #7, but that’s not usually counted as a meeting. Its date is disputed: some sources say 1940, others 1941.
The 13 times they “first met”
Every reboot needs a new first meeting. 13th Dimension counts at least 13, including:
| Where | Year | Continuity | Confidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| All-Star Comics #7 (with the Justice Society) | 1940 or 1941 | Golden Age | Disputed |
| “The Mystery of the Wax Men” (radio serial) | 1945 | Radio | Likely |
| Superman #76 | 1952 | Golden Age | Confirmed |
| Adventure Comics #275 (Superboy meets the young Bruce Wayne) | 1960 | Silver Age | Likely |
| The Man of Steel #3, “One Night in Gotham City” | 1986 | Post-Crisis | Confirmed |
| “World’s Finest”, Superman: The Animated Series | 1997 | TV | Likely |
| Batman/Superman #1 | 2013 | New 52 | Likely |
| Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice | 2016 | Film | Confirmed |
| World’s Finest #18–19 | 2023 | Today | Likely |
John Byrne’s 1986 retelling, “One Night in Gotham City”, is the one that set up their modern, post-Crisis friendship.
Superman versus Batman
They’ve fought many times, and the most famous fight isn’t in main continuity: in Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns (1986), an older Batman defeats Superman with kryptonite and careful planning. On film, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) builds a whole story around their clash. For other published match-ups, see Can Superman…?.
The Trinity
With Wonder Woman, they form DC’s “Trinity” at the heart of the Justice League. Read about her on Superman and Wonder Woman, and meet the rest of his friends on Superman’s friends and allies.

The same Superman, rewritten for every generation.
Golden Age (1938–1956)
Both appear with the Justice Society in All-Star Comics #7 (1940 or 1941; sources disagree). Their first real team-up is Superman #76 (1952), and World's Finest Comics teams them up regularly from #71 (1954).
Silver Age (1956–1986)
Firm friends in World's Finest. Adventure Comics #275 (1960) even has Superboy meet the young Bruce Wayne.
Post-Crisis (1986–2011)
John Byrne retells their first meeting in The Man of Steel #3 (1986). Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns (1986) has Batman defeat him.
New 52 to today (2011–)
Fresh first meetings in Batman/Superman #1 (2013) and World's Finest #18–19 (2023).
Film and TV
They meet in the Superman: The Animated Series episode 'World's Finest' (1997) and clash in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016).
Questions.
Are Superman and Batman friends?
Yes, in most eras. They became partners in Superman #76 (1952) and teamed up regularly in World's Finest Comics from 1954. Modern stories often make the friendship prickly, but they stay Justice League allies.
When did Superman and Batman first meet?
Their first real team-up was 'The Mightiest Team in the World' in Superman #76 (1952), where they share a cruise-ship cabin and learn each other's identities. They had appeared together earlier with the Justice Society in All-Star Comics #7, dated 1940 or 1941. Later reboots have retold the meeting many times.
Has Batman ever beaten Superman?
Yes. In Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns (1986), an older Batman defeats Superman using kryptonite and careful planning. In most stories Superman holds back, so their fights turn on preparation rather than raw power.
