In depth

The full story.

Superman and Wonder Woman are DC’s two most powerful founding heroes, so fans have always wondered whether they’d make a couple. For most of their history the answer has been no: they’re close friends who respect each other. But for a few years in the 2010s, DC said yes.

When did Superman and Wonder Woman first meet?

Moment Where Confidence
Wonder Woman’s own debut All Star Comics #8 (cover January 1942) Likely
First appearance together, as Justice Society colleagues All-Star Comics #36 (1947) Confirmed
First act as allies, at the Justice League’s debut The Brave and the Bold #28 (1960) Likely
Post-Crisis meeting; he tries to kiss her and she turns him down Legends #6 (1987) Confirmed

Friends, not a couple

For decades the comics kept them as friends and allies. Alan Moore’s “For the Man Who Has Everything” (Superman Annual #11, 1985) has a near-kiss that both of them call too predictable. After the 1986 reboot, they agreed to stay friends and confidants in Action Comics #600 (1988). In the 2005 crossover Sacrifice, Wonder Woman kills Maxwell Lord to stop him controlling Superman’s mind.

The New 52 romance

In the New 52, with Clark’s marriage to Lois erased, the two finally kissed in Justice League (vol. 2) #12, on sale on 29 August 2012. The kiss made news well beyond comics. The couple then starred in their own series, Superman/Wonder Woman, by Charles Soule and Tony Daniel, which ran for 29 issues from October 2013 to May 2016. DC Rebirth (2016) restored Clark and Lois’s marriage, and Lois Lane remains Superman’s wife in today’s comics: see the Superman family tree.

Kingdom Come

The out-of-continuity Kingdom Come (1996) goes further: it ends with Wonder Woman expecting their child. More stories like it are on Superman versions and Elseworlds.

With Batman, they make up DC’s Trinity: see Superman and Batman and the rest of Superman’s friends and allies.
