Supergirl opens below expectations with $38 million

Supergirl, starring Milly Alcock, opens to $38 million in North America and $68 million worldwide, below forecasts, as DC Studios stays confident.

An empty cinema foyer late at night, with velvet queue ropes, unsold popcorn and neon lights, and bright light pouring from the open screen doors at the far end.

The weekend of 26–28 June 2026 was a tough one for the House of El. Supergirl, starring Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, opened to about $38 million in North America, well short of what the industry had expected.

What we know

Worldwide, the opening came to roughly $68 million. Tracking had pointed higher, with early forecasts of $55 million or more for North America, cooling to the $40–50 million range in the final week. Toy Story 5, in its second weekend, took the top spot.

Audiences gave the film a B- CinemaScore, compared with Superman’s A-. One bright spot was IMAX, which delivered an unusually large share of the takings for a superhero film. Critics were split, though Alcock’s tough, punky Kara was widely praised. DC Studios co-chief Peter Safran acknowledged the result had fallen short but said the studio remained confident in its long-term plans.

Why it matters

It was the first real stumble for the new DCU, but it did not change the road ahead: Man of Tomorrow was already filming. For the film itself, see our Supergirl (2026) guide, and for where it fits, our DCU watch order.
