First Superman teaser trailer lands, with Krypto and a familiar theme

The first teaser for James Gunn's Superman arrives, showing David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan's Lois, Krypto and a twist on John Williams' theme.

On 19 December 2024, fans finally saw James Gunn’s Superman in motion. The first teaser trailer arrived, and it wasted no time reminding everyone why they love the character.

What we know

The teaser opened with a battered Superman crashing into the Antarctic snow and whistling for help, which arrives in the form of Krypto the superdog. It went on to show David Corenswet as Clark Kent at the Daily Planet, first glimpses of Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor, and members of the hero team later called the Justice Gang: Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner, Isabela Merced’s Hawkgirl and Edi Gathegi’s Mister Terrific.

Most fans’ favourite moment was the music. The trailer built to a fresh version of John Williams’ famous Superman theme, a deliberate nod to the Christopher Reeve era. A teaser poster had come out a few days earlier, and Gunn introduced the footage to press before its public release.

Why it matters

Within days Gunn reported more than 250 million views, which he said made it the most watched trailer in DC and Warner Bros. history. It set expectations for a bright, colourful Superman, which the finished film delivered.
