Milly Alcock cast as Supergirl in the new DC Universe

House of the Dragon star Milly Alcock is cast as Kara Zor-El, the DCU's Supergirl, with James Gunn confirming the news on Instagram.

On 29 January 2024, the DCU found its Kara Zor-El. Milly Alcock, the Australian actor who broke through as the young Rhaenyra Targaryen in House of the Dragon, was cast as Supergirl.

What we know

The trade press reported that Alcock won the role over Emilia Jones (CODA) and Meg Donnelly. James Gunn confirmed it himself on Instagram, replying to the reports that they were accurate and saying he was incredibly excited to have her in the DCU.

She was attached to Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, one of the films announced in the January 2023 slate and based on the acclaimed comic by Tom King and Bilquis Evely. At that point the film had no director; Craig Gillespie came on board later in 2024. Gunn later said Alcock had been the first name he suggested to Peter Safran for the part.

Why it matters

Alcock went on to make a surprise appearance at the end of Superman (2025) and to lead Supergirl in June 2026, where her performance was one of the most praised parts of the film. Read more in our Supergirl (2026) guide, and for Kara’s lost home, Krypton explained.
