James Gunn confirms Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor in Superman: Legacy
James Gunn confirms Nicholas Hoult will play Lex Luthor in Superman: Legacy, promising a Lex different from anything fans have seen before.
In December 2023, James Gunn put an end to weeks of speculation. Nicholas Hoult would be his Lex Luthor in Superman: Legacy.
What we know
Trade reports in November 2023 had already named the British actor as Gunn’s pick, though at that stage the deal was described as still being finalised. Gunn then confirmed it himself on social media after meeting Hoult for dinner, saying the two had talked about creating a Lex unlike any seen before.
There was a twist to the story. Hoult had been one of the final contenders to play Superman, screen-testing for the role that eventually went to David Corenswet. Gunn clearly saw something in him, and simply moved him to the other side of the rivalry. Hoult was known for X-Men, Mad Max: Fury Road and The Great.
Why it matters
With hindsight, this casting proved inspired. Hoult’s furious, brilliant Lex became one of the most praised parts of Superman (2025), and he is now set to share top billing in Man of Tomorrow, where Lex and Superman must work together. For every previous Lex, see our Lex Luthor guide.
