DC Studios unveils its slate, led by Superman: Legacy in July 2025
James Gunn and Peter Safran reveal Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, with Superman: Legacy dated for 11 July 2025 and a Supergirl film announced.
On 31 January 2023, James Gunn and Peter Safran showed the world their plan for DC. The first chapter of their new universe would be called Gods and Monsters, and at its heart sat a Superman film: Superman: Legacy, dated for 11 July 2025.
What we know
The presentation covered ten film and TV projects intended to run through 2027. Gunn was writing Superman: Legacy, which Safran described as the real start of the new DC Universe. At this point no director was attached, though Safran made no secret that he hoped Gunn would take the job.
Alongside Superman, the slate included Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, based on the Tom King and Bilquis Evely comic, a Batman and Robin film called The Brave and the Bold, Swamp Thing, The Authority and a Green Lantern series, Lanterns. The idea was one continuity across film, live-action TV, animation and games.
Why it matters
Superman was placed first for a reason: he was meant to set the tone for the whole universe. Over the next three years most of this slate took shape, and the Supergirl film reached cinemas in June 2026. Catch up with our DCU watch order and the Supergirl (2026) guide.
