In depth

The full story.

The Fortress of Solitude is the one place Superman can be alone with his Kryptonian past. It’s where he keeps the things he can’t keep in a Metropolis flat, and over 70 years it has moved across the globe.

What is the Fortress of Solitude?

The Fortress of Solitude is Superman’s secret retreat: a remote base, usually in polar ice, where he stores Kryptonian technology, keepsakes and memories of the planet he lost. The modern versions are built from Kryptonian crystal. For the planet behind it all, see Krypton explained.

When did the Fortress first appear?

The classic Fortress first appeared in Action Comics #241 (June 1958), in “The Super-Key to Fort Superman”. It was a base inside an Arctic mountain, opened with a giant golden key so heavy only Superman could lift it. The key was disguised as an aircraft path marker, and after a helicopter pilot followed it the comics added a cloaking device.

The idea is older than that:

  • The pulps got there first. The adventure hero Doc Savage had an Arctic “Fortress of Solitude” in the 1930s.
  • Golden Age Superman had a “Secret Citadel” inside a mountain near Metropolis (Superman #17; the year still needs checking), and by Superman #58 (1949) a Fortress of Solitude was placed in a polar waste.

Where is the Fortress of Solitude?

The location depends on the era:

Era Location Confidence
Silver Age (from 1958) Inside a mountain in the Arctic Confirmed
Post-Crisis (1986) None at first: Byrne calls Clark’s human life his “fortress of solitude” Likely
1989 Antarctica, built by the Eradicator (Action Comics Annual #2) Likely
1990s–2000s The Andes, then the Cordillera del Cóndor on the Ecuador–Peru border Likely
New 52 (2011–16) Brainiac’s old ship in space, then the Arctic; also a Yucatán base Likely
Superman (2025) Antarctica (exteriors filmed in Svalbard, Norway) Confirmed

We haven’t yet confirmed where today’s comics place it, so we leave that row out until we can cite it.

What’s inside the Fortress?

In the Silver Age the Fortress was part museum and part laboratory:

  • Kandor, the Kryptonian city shrunk and bottled by Brainiac in Action Comics #242 (1958).
  • A Phantom Zone projector, introduced with the Zone in Adventure Comics #283 (1961).
  • An alien zoo and trophy rooms.
  • A room for his cousin Supergirl.
  • Statues of Jor-El and Lara holding up a globe of Krypton, one of the Fortress’s best-known sights.

Post-Crisis versions add helpers such as the robot Kelex (see Superman’s Kryptonian tech), and in Superman (2025) the Fortress has robots and a sun chamber where Superman heals. Krypto drags him there after a beating.

The Fortress on screen

  • Superman (1978): Clark grows the Fortress from a crystal he finds in his ship. The set was built in England, at Shepperton Studios and on Pinewood’s 007 Stage. More British connections are on Superman and Britain.
  • Smallville (2001–11): the Crystal of Knowledge creates it.
  • Superman & Lois (2021–24): placed in Qausuittuq National Park, near the Arctic Ocean in Canada.
  • Superman (2025): set in Antarctica, with exteriors filmed in Adventdalen, Svalbard, in Norway. Variety reports that the set took six months to design and 16 weeks to build, using 242 resin crystals, and drew on both the 1978 film and All-Star Superman.
  • Supergirl (2026): also places the Fortress in Antarctica.

See our Superman (2025) guide for more on the film.
